In today’s fast-evolving retail landscape, the ability to easily integrate, manage, and update product information in real-time is not just an advantage—it's a necessity. Hanshow's cutting-edge Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) provide retailers with unparalleled flexibility and control, transforming the way stores operate and enhancing the overall shopping experience. The importance of leveraging technology to integrate digital information in the customer journey becomes even more apparent with the upcoming European Digital Product Passports[1] (DPP) regulation.

A Game-Changer for Retail

Intergamma, a market leader in the Benelux DIY market, has collaborated with Hanshow to pilot a use case for the integration of the DPP QR codes on ESLs through the ShoppingTomorrow Expert Group for Digital Product Passports. The QR code on the ESL provide easy access to  the DPP use case, which offers customers detailed information on sustainability metrics, product lifecycle, and disposal guidelines. Al though many steps still need to be taken before DPPs will be readily available in the DIY stores, this use case marks a significant step toward enhanced transparency and a more sustainable retail environment.

At the core of this initiative is the ability of Hanshow's ESLs to easily integrate with existing retail systems, manage large volumes of product data, and instantly update QR codes to reflect the latest product details. This seamless integration enables retailers to provide accurate, real-time information at the shelf level, making DPP access both intuitive and accessible for customers and employees alike.

The Role of ESLs in Supporting DPP Integration

Hanshow's ESLs are more than just digital price tags—they are a complete solution for managing and presenting dynamic product information. Here’s how they bring unique value to the DPP initiative:

    • Effortless Integration: The ESLs are designed to integrate effortlessly with centralized systems such as Product Information Management (PIM) and GS1 Digital Link, ensuring that all product data is synchronized in real-time.
    • Instant Updates: With Hanshow’s ESLs, updating product information, such as sustainability metrics, becomes as simple as pushing a button. This capability is vital for ensuring that Digital Product Passport data is always up-to-date and accurate for consumers.
    • Seamless Management: Managing thousands of products across hundreds of stores can be daunting. Hanshow’s ESLs streamline this process, offering an easy-to-manage solution that allows for quick changes in QR codes and product details without the need for manual intervention.

    Bringing Sustainability to the Forefront

Sustainability is no longer a buzzword—it’s a critical factor in consumer decision-making. By exploring the first use case of integrating DPPs with Hanshow’s ESLs, Intergamma shows what the future of ESLs and DPPs may hold: With a simple scan of a QR code, shoppers can access detailed product information, including environmental footprints, materials used, and instructions for proper disposal or recycling.

For retailers, this also opens up new opportunities for aligning with sustainability goals, enhancing customer loyalty, and differentiating from competitors. Employees, too, benefit from having instant access to product data, enabling them to provide better support and offer advice on sustainable options.

A Win-Win for Retailers, Employees, and Consumers

A successful implementation of Hanshow’s ESLs with DPP integration is a win-win scenario for everyone involved:

  • Consumers benefit from transparent, easy-to-access information that helps them make more informed purchasing decisions.
  • Employees are equipped with the latest product data, reducing their workload and improving their ability to assist customers.
  • Retailers enjoy improved customer engagement, streamlined operations, and a stronger alignment with sustainability efforts.

Looking Ahead: A Smarter and Greener Retail Future

Hanshow’s ESLs are paving the way for a more integrated, data-driven retail environment. The integration of DPPs in ESLS demonstrates the immense potential of combining innovative technology with sustainability-focused initiatives. As the retail industry continues to evolve, Hanshow’s ESLs will remain at the forefront, driving efficiency, transparency, and sustainability across stores worldwide.

[1] The Digital Product Passport (DPP) in the EU is part of the broader Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which aims to make products more sustainable and transparent. The DPP will act as a digital record that contains comprehensive information about a product's lifecycle, including its materials, environmental impact, repairability, and recycling options. This digital passport will be accessible via QR codes or other scannable tags on products.
